Project room # 4

18.08 - 01.10

Landscape at Svalbard.
Rembert Deprez

In NOUA Project Room, NOUA presents Norwegian and international artists working with photography, photobooks and lens-based mediums. The audience gains insight into the artist's themes, research and working processes through sketchbooks, test prints, theory and technical tests. All project room exhibitions are opened with a short tour and artist talk with a presentation of the artistship.

The artist talk on 17th August starts with a short tour of the Project Room at 7pm, followed by a conversation and presentation in the seminar room (ground level). Lasts until approx. 21.00, sale of drinks from the bar.

Rembert De Prez is the fourth artist to be presented in the project room in 2022. Since 2021, De Prez has through his project Experimental Garden – A Conversation On Permafrost (2021-ongoing) been doing visual artistic research on the theme of permafrost in Arctic regions. Permafrost is soil that, as the name suggests, should remain permanently frozen. Due to climate change this soil is thawing and accelerates global warming. In this research-based project, the artist is investigating how we can visualise an invisible but threatening phenomenon like thawing permafrost. De Prez’s work arises from a fascination around the complex relationship between natural and man-altered landscapes. He uses photography to make time tangible, catching its tracks in space and the impact it has on the observed landscapes. In this way, his research-based documentary projects become a compass that guides the way to transitional, unfamiliar places. Within these global themes De Prez wants to create a certain transparency of the documentary form itself and expose the strengths and limitations of the photographic medium.

Rembert De Prez (b. 1990) is a Belgian artist photographer, who lives and works in Ghent.
