Copeland Gallery, 2019 'Where You Are Not Selected' works from 'Aomori', 2017

In NOUA Project Room, NOUA presents Norwegian and international artists working with photography, photobooks and lens-based mediums. The audience gains insight into the artist's themes, research and working processes through sketchbooks, test prints, theory and technical tests. All project room exhibitions are opened with a short tour and artist talk with a presentation of the artistship.

The artist talk on 1st March starts with a short tour of the Project Room at 7pm, followed by a conversation and presentation in the seminar room (ground level). Lasts until approx. 21.00, sale of drinks from the bar.

We are happy to present Alexander Mourant (UK) as the first artist to NOUAs new Project Room series. In the project room the audience will meet Mourant’s artistic research and learn about the processes behind his long term projects. The audience will be able to actively delve into his material, and Mourant will also be holding a short tour and artist talk.

The work of Alexander Mourant embraces autobiography, literature and reference-based thinking, to create narratives that question the relationship between the body and the photographic medium. His practice is a deeply rooted investigation into photography, writing, performance and sculpture, and seeks to uncover a parallelism between action and theoretical discourse. Known for his post-conceptual approach and expanded research, he often utilises methodologies cultivated by the 1960s-70s Land Art movement, Performance and Arte Povera, to help question, or push, our understanding of the photographic. Mourant proposes how images may deal with temporality, spatiality and reflexivity, through new ways of thinking, and alludes to the photographic becoming a terrain itself, and a place we traverse.

Alexander Mourant is an artist, educator and writer based in London. He has been commissioned by FT Weekend Magazine, Hapax Magazine and The Greatest Magazine, and included in publications such as British Journal of Photography, The Guardian, Photograph, Unseen Magazine and Photomonitor. Solo shows include Aomori at The Old Truman Brewery and Unseen Amsterdam, alongside group shows at Lismore Castle Arts, Edel Assanti, Saatchi Gallery, Seen Fifteen Gallery, Peckham 24 and Photo50, London Art Fair. Mourant is a recipient of grants from ArtHouse Jersey, Jersey Bursary and Arts Council England. He has won the Free Range Award and was nominated for the Foam Paul Huf Award. Mourant is a member of Revolv Collective, an arts organisation established in 2017 which champions art pedagogy; he is also a Contributor at C4 Journal, a platform dedicated to writing about photography and the various incarnations of the photobook. Mourant achieved BA Photography at Falmouth University, and MA Photography at Royal College of Art, London.
