About the talk:
In the 1990s, many artists and photographers began to use material from public and private archives and collections as artistic raw materials. This tendency has been described as an archival twist in art, and has been both praised and criticized. "Archival art" often challenges and criticizes existing history writing. In this talk, Hanne will especially take a closer look at some Greenlandic and Sami artists who in different ways relate to material taken from different archives and collections. In order to see what strategies artists such as Pia Arke, Inuuteq Storch, Katarina Pirak Sikku and Outi Pieski use when they enter into a dialogue with history writing and create new knowledge and new stories, she will in the lecture use concepts such as re-staging, reuse and repatriation.
